Theatre Arts Collective – Mafungwashe

A spiritual black tax – Mafungwashe is a work that tracks the journey of the protagonist Nosizwe as she takes care of her ill father while experiencing her ancestral calling. This is no ordinary calling as Nosizwe is being called by her two ancestors who are at odds with one another. They represent the masculine and feminine principles (yin and yang), and the conflict between them becomes a tug of war, all while using Nosizwe as a vessel to store their strength and to share their individual life stories. Mafungwashe is a work set in the Eastern Cape, in a small RDP house and takes place during the 2015 Fees must fall movement. It is in this house where themes of betrayal, love, evil, dreams and death are played out. Nosizwe is indebted to her father, her ancestors, and the student movement. The cost of all these debts might be her very life.
