Theatre Arts – The House of Truth

Can Themba’s life, writing, personal joys, and political battles

explode into full colour in this energetic and pithy one-man play.

The House of Truth was Can Themba’s single room bachelor flat

located at 111 Ray Street in Sophiatown of the 1950s. With

House of Truth, Themba was opening a platform for candid

debate, and all those who were interested in intellectual

engagement. Black and white, were welcome.

The play The House of Truth written by Siphiwo Mahala

Weaves together elements of Themba’s life and career with deft

wit and poise, recreating the sparkle of Sophiatown before both

were literally destroyed by apartheid legislations. It is fitting to

celebrate the life of Can Themba and the work he did during the

apartheid era in South Africa.
